This complete collection of linguistic wit and wisdom is the perfect companion for language lovers, bringing together the best of Penguin's Guides to the uses and misuses of English.
𝟏. 𝐔𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞: 𝐀 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡
Usage and Abusage takes a long, hard look at the use - and constant misuse - of English. Declaring war on bad grammar, woolliness of expression and poor choice of vocabulary, this essential guide sets out both to highlight problems and pitfalls and to offer constructive advice on the proper use of English.
𝟐. 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐞: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡
Can anything be described as 'very real'? There are so many obstacles on the way to writing clear, precise ('accurate'?) English ('english'?) that it is a wonder ('wander'?) anyone ('any one' or 'anyone'?) can be understood. Fortunately, all those who have ever feared being shown up by using one of the twenty worst words and phrases to be avoided at all costs, or confusing the complex with the complicated, can now relax and even enjoy a trouble-shooting guide to good writing. Trask's wonderfully readable and authoritative book adjudicates on hundreds of contentious issues from politically correct language to whether to write 'napkin' or 'serviette'.
𝟑. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐬
Entertaining and informative, this rich and diverse collection of over 6000 proverbs (and their origins) is a delight to browse and the perfect addition to any home reference shelf.
𝟒.𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬
This dictionary investigates the wide range of cliches throughout the history of the English language. With over 1500 sourced cliches listed, both ancient an modern, this work looks at the more informal side of the English language.
𝟓. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐐𝐮𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬
From Miss Piggy to Woody Allen ('Not only is there no God, but try getting a plumber at weekends'), from Dorothy Parker to Mae West ('To err is human, but it feels divine'), from Morecambe and Wise to Homer Simpson ('To alcohol! The cause of - and solution to - all of life's problems'), the last hundred years offer a rich banquet of humour. Even Belgium, golf and inflation have inspired witty remarks. Here is the definitive collection, organised by theme and offering more laughs per page than any other book.

We based our evaluation of book condition on the following criteria:
* New: Just like it sounds. A brand-new, unused, unread copy in perfect condition.
* Like New: An apparently unread copy in perfect condition. Dust cover is intact; pages are clean and are not marred by notes or folds of any kind.
* Very Good: A copy that has been read, but remains in excellent condition. Pages are intact and are not marred by notes or highlighting, but may contain a neat previous owner name. The spine remains undamaged.
* Good: A copy that has been read, but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact, and the cover is intact. The spine may show signs of wear. Pages can include limited notes and highlighting, and the copy can include "From the library of" labels or previous owner inscriptions.
* Acceptable: A readable copy. All pages are intact, and the cover is intact (the dust cover may be missing). Pages can include considerable notes--in pen or highlighter--but the notes cannot obscure the text.
