When foreshortening something in a drawing—like this kitten’s left paw—draw the object as you really see it, not the way you think it should look. Start by outlining the fur, following the direction of the hair growth. Once the outline has been established, freehand sketch the facial features. |
Reinforce the darkest areas of the face using a 2B pencil, leaving a highlight in each eye. These highlights should be the lightest areas of the drawing, with the pupils being the darkest. |
Shade using a 2B pencil to emphasize the darkest areas of the fur with quick, short, tapering strokes that are lifted at the end. Create the whiskers using the negative drawing techniques described below. Add tone to the eyes with an H pencil, leaving highlights in each. Use a tortillon to soften the irises. |

Blend the dark areas and midtones together with a bristle brush (if you have one) using a sweeping back-and-forth motion. Lay in the midtone areas of the fur with an H pencil and use a 2H pencil for the slightly lighter fur. |
Lift out highlights from the fur with a kneaded eraser pinched to a sharp edge. Also use the pinched edge of the eraser to lighten the whiskers. With an H pencil, darken the areas at the base of the whiskers. To ground the kitten in the scene, add some grass using an H pencil. Switch to a 2B pencil to fill in the areas between the grass blades, blending them with a bristle brush. |
Go over the darkest areas with a 4B pencil. Use either an electric eraser or a kneaded eraser shaped into a point for the brightest highlights, making sure the highlight in each eye is as bright as it can be. Add more detail to the grass, using an H pencil to define the blades. Be careful not to render too much detail in the grass, as the focus of this drawing should be the kitten. |

* Like New: An apparently unread copy in perfect condition. Dust cover is intact; pages are clean and are not marred by notes or folds of any kind.
* Very Good: A copy that has been read, but remains in excellent condition. Pages are intact and are not marred by notes or highlighting, but may contain a neat previous owner name. The spine remains undamaged.
* Good: A copy that has been read, but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact, and the cover is intact. The spine may show signs of wear. Pages can include limited notes and highlighting, and the copy can include "From the library of" labels or previous owner inscriptions.
* Acceptable: A readable copy. All pages are intact, and the cover is intact (the dust cover may be missing). Pages can include considerable notes--in pen or highlighter--but the notes cannot obscure the text.
